In the Police Dog 1 (PD1) Protection Phase, dogs are tested on realistic protection and apprehension skills designed to assess courage, grip quality, handler control, athleticism, and overall temperament. This portion of the PD1 title moves beyond obedience and challenges the dog/handler team with essential protection exercises that simulate real-world police work.
📌 Key Protection Exercises Included:
• Friendly Greeting & Control with a Hostile Helper – Shows control when a helper shifts from calm to aggressive behavior.
• Passive Alert – Dog demonstrates awareness and stability when a threat is present.
• Jump Out Attack – Dog engages a helper who suddenly appears, testing drive, aggression, and stability.
• Defense of the Handler – Demonstrates a dog’s ability to defend the handler when threatened.
• Courage Test with Gunshots – Dog must approach and engage with confidence despite loud distractions.
Throughout the PD1 Protection Phase, judges evaluate strong grips, eagerness to engage, responsiveness to handler commands, control, and a balanced temperament. Dogs must prove they possess not only drive and courage but also reliability and control under pressure.
To earn the full PD1 title, teams must score 70+ points in the Protection Phase on the same trial they earn 70+ in obedience.
