'The Big Show', starring Tallulah Bankhead, was broadcast by NBC Radio during the 1950-51 and 1951-52 seasons, on Sunday nights. It was an expensive, and ultimately futile, effort to regain the audience that had followed Amos-n-Andy, Jack Benny, and Edgar Bergen & Charlie McCarthy from NBC to CBS. Each 90-minute program boasted a galaxy of stars whom Ms. Bankhead introduced at the opening, and called back at the closing to sing, or say, a verse of 'May The Good Lord Bless And Keep You'. The song was subsequently recorded by opera singer and country singer alike, but a performance such as heard here, an excerpt from the Christmas eve 1950 broadcast, is the way it became popular.
With Ms. Bankhead in the second photograph is Meredith Willson, music director for the series ('The Music Man' was still in the future); the image at the end is the then current NBC logo, displayed here accompanied by the first auditory trademark the US Patent Office ever registered, the NBC chimes.
