1849: Rome Becomes a Republic — Protestant America Stands Aside

In 1849, Rome expelled Pius IX and proclaimed a democratic republic—a legendary story most Italians have never heard in full. The United States watched closely but refused recognition: religion, fear of social revolution and interests over affinities shaped Washington’s choice.

This episode draws on my new academic article (link below) and features insights from an interview I just recorded with Prof. Timothy M. Roberts of University of Western Illinois. Shot on the Janiculum, with primary sources (Margaret Fuller, Nicholas Brown, John M. Clayton, Mazzini).
