Vomiting, or emesis, might be unpleasant, but it's your body’s way of protecting itself. This complex reflex is controlled by the vomiting center in your brain, which coordinates the muscles and organs involved in the process.
When triggered by infection, toxins, motion sickness, or other stimuli, the vomiting center activates a chain reaction:
🔻 Your stomach muscles contract, while your diaphragm and abdominal muscles press upward.
🔻 The esophageal sphincter relaxes, allowing stomach contents to flow upward.
🔻 Your body prepares for this reflex by increasing saliva to protect your mouth and throat from stomach acid.
Want to see the physiology of vomiting in action? With VOKA 3D Anatomy & Pathology, explore the intricate processes behind this reflex in hyper-realistic 3D models!
