🖼️ Chivalry (1885)
🎨 Sir Frank Bernard Dicksee (1853–1928)
Sir Frank Bernard Dicksee is a British painter celebrated for his dramatic, romantic visions of medieval heroism and feminine beauty. Deeply influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, his works blend lush color with emotional intensity and often explore themes of honor, devotion, and sacrifice. He later became President of the Royal Academy and was knighted for his contributions to British art.
Chivalry remains one of his most recognized and mysterious works.
At first glance, it feels like a classic story. A noble knight. A fallen enemy. A bound maiden waiting to be saved. But the painting withholds its truth.
Is this dawn or dusk? A beginning or an end? She is tied to a tree, her dress slipping from her shoulder, her eyes fixed on the knight. Does she look at him with hope, or fear? Admiration, or dread?
And then we have the knight, his expression unreadable. Is he the hero? Or simply the one who remained standing? Or maybe the next chapter of her captivity?
Dicksee's title is Chivalry. But what we see depends on where we choose to look. What if the wrong knight won?
