Let's build a Low-tech No-filter Sweet Potato Aquarium using walstad method.

Based on my experience, it is crucial to create mud using potting soil. If the potting soil is dry, it will trap a lot of air in the substrate layer. When the substrate layer accumulates too much air, the air may escape and break through the sand capping layer, which in turn results in the soil escaping into the water column and dirtying the water in the aquarium. The water column will now have lots of nutrients from the soil, which will cause algae bloom.

If the mud is too watery, the sand or gravel will sink into the mud layer and be unable to effectively cap the mud at the bottom. The mud will escape into the water column and result in dirty water and algae bloom.

The best way to create a dough-like mud layer is where the sand or gravel can sit on it. This allows the sand cap layer to effectively keep the mud layer at the bottom and prevent it from escaping into the water column.

Due to the size of my aquarium, I set the soil layer to be 1.5cm and the sand cap layer to 3.5 cm.

Plants I used in this aquarium:
1) Water Wisteria
2) Monte Carlo
3) Dwarf Water Lettuce
4) Sweet Potato

Light:
Philips E27 8W LED light (Cool daylight)
Siesta light schedule: 5 hour on, 4 hours off, 5 hours

Fertiliser:
Not dosing liquid fertiliser for now.

Aquarium Inhabitants:
3 juvenile wild type guppies
6 yellow rilli shrimps
A few ramshorn snails

Water change equipments:
I am using camping shower pump for water change and filling my my aquarium.
