Life in the yard has been much harder since Thomas left to run his branchline. Now, with no tank engine to shunt coaches or be the station pilot, Henry, James, and Gordon must shunt in the sidings and fetch their own coaches. The big engines find doing "tank engine" duties most annoying and degrading. They all feel that tender engines are too important to fetch coaches and shunt in the yard. One blustery day, Gordon arrives at the other end of the line (Vicarstown) with his train and heads for the turntable. The turntable is by the sea, so the wind is very strong there and unless an engine is perfectly balanced on the turntable, it becomes difficult to turn. Gordon is in a bad temper and is unable to get perfectly balanced, especially with the wind blowing so fiercely. Neither his driver nor his fireman can get him to cooperate. After trying again and again, they give up and tell Gordon that his big tender upsets the balance and then remark that if he was a little tank engine, then they could turn him. Now, Gordon is forced to pull his next train tender first. When Gordon arrives at the junction, a group of boys joke around and taunt Gordon by calling him a tank engine. Thomas, who is waiting at the junction, laughs too and suggests that Gordon should "scrap his tender and have a nice bunker". James flies by with his train and laughs at Gordon too. Gordon warns James that he may end up like him as well, but James claims that he won't stick because he's not as fat as Gordon is. When James gets to the sheds, he carefully lines up on the turntable, he is perfectly balanced and his crew slowly rotates the turntable. But the strong wind has other ideas and begins to spin James around uncontrollably. Gordon arrives just in time to see the whole thing. When the wind dies down, the turntable slows down too and James is able to back into the shed and says nothing, looking rather sick, dizzy and humiliated. That night, Gordon, James, and Henry hold an indignation meeting. They are very cross with what's happened to them over the course of that day and they're upset that Sir Topham Hatt doesn't do anything to fix this and for him to meet the engines demands. The tender engines decide it would be best to go on strike.
