Women have traditionally been given the responsibility for making sure a pregnancy goes smoothly, but what about the other 50% of the population? A growing amount of research is showing that men need to step up their health game especially during the 6 months pre-conception.
Men can contribute to miscarriages due to sperm quality issues caused by various lifestyle choices that negatively impact reproductive health. While many people focus on female factors in pregnancy loss, research shows that male sperm health plays a crucial role in embryo development and pregnancy success.
How Men’s Lifestyle Choices Can Cause Miscarriage
1. Poor Sperm DNA Integrity
Smoking, alcohol, and drug use can cause DNA fragmentation in sperm, leading to genetic defects in the embryo.
High levels of oxidative stress from these habits increase sperm DNA damage, making implantation and fetal development less likely to succeed.
2. Obesity and Poor Diet
Being overweight or obese leads to hormonal imbalances, reducing sperm quality and motility.
Diets high in processed foods, trans fats, and sugars can increase inflammation, harming sperm DNA and contributing to early pregnancy loss.
3. Exposure to Toxins and Environmental Factors
Pesticides, heavy metals, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (found in plastics and some personal care products) can lower sperm quality.
Men who work in high-exposure environments (e.g., factories, agriculture, or chemical industries) may have sperm with genetic defects linked to miscarriage.
4. Heat and Radiation Effects
Frequent sauna or hot tub use, tight underwear, or prolonged laptop use on the lap can overheat the testicles, leading to reduced sperm quality.
Radiation from frequent phone use in pockets or excessive exposure to electronic devices may contribute to sperm damage.
5. Chronic Stress and Poor Sleep
High cortisol (stress hormone) levels can decrease testosterone and sperm production.
Lack of sleep and high-stress lifestyles have been linked to lower sperm quality, which increases the risk of failed implantation and miscarriage.
