In this video, I'm hiking North Japan's Tallest Peak: Chokai-san (Mt. Chokai) from the slightly unconventional Yunodai Trail. At 2,236m, Chokai-san (Mt. Chokai) is the highest mountain in Yamagata Prefecture.
Reigning over Yamagata and Akita Prefectures, Chokai-san (Mt. Chokai) is the gem in the eye of Tohoku, northern Japan. The astounding peak offers breathtaking scenery, a background story for the ages, and plenty of chances for the ultimate outdoor experience to boot.
Shortly after Quinlan from @GoNorthJapan did his recent hike up Chokai-san, I followed suit! Only, I tried from The Yunodai Trail in Sakata City, arguably one of the harder trails up north Japan's tallest peak. This is a very challenging hike and is not for the faint of heart!
If you're looking for an adventure and something special to add to your Japan hiking list, then check out this hike to the top of Chokai-san! Along the way, you'll explore some of the most stunning scenery in Yamagata, including the Shonai Plains, Gassan and the other Dewa Sanzan peaks. This hike is not for the faint of heart, but if you're up for a challenge, it's definitely one you don't want to miss!
