Bengal Violence: Murshidabad Violence Victim Recounts Anti-Waqf Protests Aftermath; West Bengal News

In the wake of violent protests over the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, in West Bengal's Murshidabad district, victims and affected residents are calling for the imposition of President's Rule to restore law and order.

The unrest began on April 11, 2025, following Friday prayers, with protesters blocking roads, hurling stones at security forces, and torching vehicles, including police vans and public buses. The violence led to the deaths of at least three individuals, including a father and son who were reportedly stabbed to death in Jafrabad, Samserganj. Another person sustained a bullet injury in Dhulian, where a private hospital and shopping mall were vandalized and set ablaze.

In response to the escalating violence, the Calcutta High Court ordered the deployment of central paramilitary forces to the affected areas. Over 150 individuals have been arrested, and prohibitory orders have been imposed in several parts of Murshidabad. Internet services have also been suspended to prevent the spread of misinformation.

The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, passed by the central government, has been met with opposition in West Bengal. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has stated that the Act will not be implemented in the state, emphasizing that it was enacted by the central government. Opposition leaders have criticized the state government's handling of the situation, calling for strict action against those responsible for the violence.

The situation remains tense, with ongoing raids and heightened security measures in place to prevent further escalation.
