Final Approach to Aircraft Carrier (CASE I/VFR)
A Case I approach is used in clear weather (cloud deck above 3,000 ft and visibility over 5 miles).
Approach Speed/AoA: The F/A-18 uses a specific angle of attack (AoA) for landing, around 8 degrees or indicated by the "E bracket" on the HUD surrounding your velocity vector. The correct approach speed will vary with weight, but will generally be around 135-140 knots.
Carrier Pattern:
Fly to the carrier control area (CCA) and enter the holding pattern (typically 2,000 ft).
Descend to 800 ft, parallel the carrier on its starboard side, and execute an overhead break (idle power, speed brakes).
Lower your landing gear and full flaps below 255 knots.
Roll out at approximately 180 degrees to the carrier's course and descend to 600 ft.
Execute the final turn, rolling out at about 3/4 of a mile from the carrier, calling "ball" to the Landing Signal Officer (LSO).
