Benten Island is the symbol of Tomonoura.
Bentenjima Shrine is located on the island, and is a popular destination for people who come to pray for safety at sea and prosperity in business.
The shrine's enshrined deity is Ichikishimahime-no-Mikoto, also known as Benzaiten.
The Heisei Iroha Maru is a restored ship modeled after the Edo period merchant ship Iroha Maru.
In 1867, the Iroha Maru, a ship operated by a shipping company associated with Sakamoto Ryoma, collided with the Meiko Maru, a warship of the Kishu domain.
It was at the port of Tomonoura that Sakamoto Ryoma negotiated compensation for the collided ship.
At that time, Ryoma is said to have said, "I will repay for sinking the ship not with money, but with the country."
Tomonoura is the town that served as the inspiration for the setting of the Ghibli film "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea."
Director Hayao Miyazaki stayed in Tomonoura for around two to three months in 2004, where he developed the concept for the film.
During the director's stay, a restoration project for the townhouse "Obune-yado Iroha" progressed.
The town's scenery and culture come alive in the film, captivating visitors.
