In this Video We Eat and Celebrate at a Hawaiian lūʻau (common English term as "luau") is
a traditional Hawaiian party or feast that is usually accompanied by entertainment. This Luau we are attending is from CHIEFS LUAU, there are a lot of places that offer LUAU, and each has its own unique twist to the celebration Among people from Hawaiʻi, the concepts of luau and party are often blended, resulting in Luau celebration for graduation, baptism, birthday, wedding, baby shower and may more celebrations.
In this Series part of the LU’AU we will be featuring the different native Polynesian dances that vary from the different pacific islands. Each of which having its unique style, rhythm, music and purpose. These serve as a window to their unique and amazing culture. And I can say that these are amazing to watch with all those dance movements, colorful costumes and so much more.
The 8TH dance we will be featuring is the SAMOAN FIRE KNIFE DANCE or SIVA AFI
The fire knife is a traditional Samoan cultural implement that is used in ceremonial dances. It was originally composed of a machete wrapped in towels on both ends with a portion of the blade exposed in the middle. Tribal performers of fire knife dancing (or Siva Afi or even "Ailao Afi" as it is called in Samoa) dance while twirling the knife and doing other acrobatic stunts. The towels are set afire during the dances, hence the name. And I would say that this is the highlight and the best performance for our visit here in CHIEFS LU’AU. Two or three of the performers and fire dancing world champions, and as you will see it takes great skill, composure, balance and talent to do these stunts all while throwing and spinning something that could put 3rd degree burns your skin. And this was definitely planned to be the last dance to be performed during the evening as you will appreciate the fire with the darkness in the background, which adds to the allure of the performance. So shoutout to these men and women that gave a great performance in CHIEFs Lu’au.
SO, what are we waiting for, LETS CELEBRATE the SIVA AFI or SAMOAN FIRE KNIFE dance
