On this dreary afternoon, I got a call for a 55ft SeaRay that was aground up at Jewfish Key after a front came though and they drug anchor during the resulting thunderstorm. These jobs are almost always trickier than they initially seem for one big reason. The anchor and chain. Because they were at anchor and it drug, there’s usually quite a bit of chain out which means they can’t just pull the anchor up from where they are. This means that I have to pull them in the general direction of the anchor and I’m not able to wiggle them back and forth very much to break suction. That being said, after a few minutes of hard pulling, I was able to break them free and get them on their way home!

AI-Generated Description:
Today’s call was for a 55-foot SeaRay that decided to audition for the role of "unwilling land yacht" by dragging anchor during a surprise thunderstorm and ending up aground on the edge of Jewfish Key.
This wasn’t just a “pop it in reverse and go” situation either—because when a boat drags anchor in a storm, it doesn’t gently drift. It plows. And in this case, they plowed their way up onto a shallow patch, with a whole spool of anchor chain still deployed like they were prepping for an offshore hurricane.
So now I’m dealing with a boat stuck at a bad angle, in sketchy weather, with a ton of chain between me and freedom. Can’t tow them backward or forward until I either recover or work around the anchor—and as anyone who’s ever tried to tow a boat with 80 feet of metal spaghetti dangling off the bow can tell you, it’s like trying to push a shopping cart with a loose dog leash tied to the front.
To make it even better, the storm was still hanging around just long enough to keep everything wet, windy, and a little dramatic—because why not?
But after some maneuvering, a lot of chain wrangling, and a healthy dose of muttering under my breath, I got them floating again and headed in the right direction.
Just another textbook rescue of "a big boat, a bad storm, and an anchor that decided to hold after it was too late."
If you’ve ever wondered what happens when anchoring goes wrong and Mother Nature shows up to make it worse… this is the video for you.
