(4 Sep 2012) Israeli police say a Trappist monastery located on a hilltop overlooking the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem road was defaced with anti-Christian and other graffiti and its door was set alight.
The vandalism at the monastery in Latrun took place overnight.
Some of the graffiti referred to unauthorised settler outposts and one read, "Jesus is a monkey."
Father Paul Saouma, Abbot of Latrun Trappist Monastery looked dazed as he exited the monastery to inspect the damage.
"Not nice. What can I say? What can I say?" he said.
Suspicion fell on settlers and their supporters who retaliate against anti-settlement measures, generally by attacking Palestinian property, but also by vandalising Christian sites and Israeli military facilities.
Earlier this week, the government ordered settlers out of two unauthorised enclaves in the West Bank.
