Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) 1960s/1970s

These videos were taken by my father in the 1960s and early 1970s at Los Angeles (LAX) on Kodachrome film. He recently had them converted to a digital format and I am happy to share them now. I have not edited them at all, other than to splice three separate clips together.

I didn’t want to clutter the screen with some descriptions, but here are some interesting facts about a few of the planes that you can clearly see the registrations on:

N93105, the Trans World (TWA) Boeing 747-131 was the 21st 747 built. It was delivered new to TWA on March 7, 1970.

D-ABUE is a Lufthansa Boeing 707-330. Today that registration belongs to a Condor 767.

SE-DBE is the SAS DC-8-60. It was delivered new to SAS on May 3, 1967 and written off in Rome just three years later (April 19, 1970) after a rejected take-off and resulting fire.

N741PA is a Pan Am 747-121 and the 17th 747 produced. It was delivered to Pan Am on February 28, 1970 and served 20 years with the company before being retired and converted to a freighter. It ended up with Polar Air Cargo.

N4719U is a United Airlines 747-122, delivered on June 26, 1971. This was the 145th 747 to be built.

There is also a quick cameo by a Santa Fe train led by four engines as well as a U.S. Air Force C-47 (DC-3).
