"I congratulate you on this event (on the organisation's 30th anniversary). I hope the organization that became a full-value international structure will develop further, I'm referring to difficult times, but I would like to stress in this regard that there were challenging times in 1992 and 2002 as well, they never end. But the organization plays a very important stabilizing role in the post-Soviet area. I hope its opportunities and influence in our area of responsibility will increase."

STORYLINE:
Russian President Vladimir Putin was hopeful on Monday a military alliance of select former Soviet states, the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organisation), "will develop further".
He also congratulated member states on the organisation's 30th anniversary during an opening speech at the CSTO summit in Moscow.
"I hope its opportunities and influence in our area of responsibility will increase," Putin added.
The Russian president was hosting the leaders of five other CSTO member states - Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan - to mark the organisation's 30th anniversary.
