The #UnitedKingdom has recently announced significant reforms to its #PostStudyWork (#PSW) visa rules, as detailed in the May 2025 immigration white paper.
1. Reduced Duration: The Graduate Route visa duration will be shortened from two years to 18 months for most graduates. PhD holders will continue to have a three-year stay period.
2. Increased Compliance for Institutions: Universities sponsoring international students will face stricter compliance requirements, including mandatory use of the Agent Quality Framework for recruitment and enhanced monitoring of visa compliance.
3. Proposed Levy on International Student Income: The government is considering a 6% levy on income from international student fees, which would be reinvested into the UK’s higher education and skills system.
4. Longer Settlement Pathway: The qualifying period for settlement (indefinite leave to remain) will increase from five to ten years for most visa holders, including those on the #Graduate Route.
5. Higher #Salary Thresholds and #English Language Requirements: Salary thresholds for skilled worker visas will rise, and English language requirements will be strengthened for both students and their dependants.
Implications for #Indian #Students
The National Indian Students and Alumni Union #UK (NISAU) has expressed relief that the #Graduate Route remains available but is concerned about the reduced duration, which may limit opportunities for graduates to secure #employment and transition to #skilledworker visas.
These reforms aim to ensure that international graduates move into graduate-level roles and contribute meaningfully to the UK economy. However, they also introduce additional challenges for students planning to study and work in the UK #postgraduation
