An ailing Thai elephant landed back in his home country for medical treatment on Sunday, after a long journey from Sri Lanka that included a ride in a customized transport container and a long flight.
The 30-year-old elephant, Sak Surin, is one of three gifted by Thai government to Sri Lanka in 2001. He was transferred to a Buddhist temple in the south of the island where he paraded in religious pageants despite suffering from a limp.
Animal rights activists had previously raised the alarm that the elephant was being mistreated.
Upon landing in northern Chiang Mai province in Thailand after a five-hour-long flight, it was transported immediately to Thai Elephant Conservation Center for a quarantine period of at least 30 days and later, for medical treatment.
