MEGA SEOUL 4 DECADES: Interviews with 3 Canadian Ambassadors to Korea -1

Seoul, the City I will Always Remember.

Presented by the Korean Cultural Centre Canada as part of the public programming of the MEGA SEOUL 4 DECADES exhibition, the first video of the “Interviews with 3 Canadian Ambassadors to Korea” series is with Mr. Leonard Edwards and his wife, Mrs. Margaret Edwards. They represented Canada in Seoul as Mr. and Mrs. Ambassador between 1991 and 1994.

Mr. Edwards starts the interview by expressing how much he was overwhelmed by the economic vitality of Korea during his tenure in Seoul. He points out that the two largest markets in Seoul, Dongdaemun and Namdaemun Markets, represent Seoul's people and its incredible energy, which explains the secrets of Korea’s economic success. Mr. Edwards recounts how the markets had everything, and all the products sold were made locally. Witnessing the hardworking people and the amazing liveliness coming out of the markets, he anticipated that the pathway for Korea was the right one, he says.

Seoul is also the most memorable city to Mr. and Mrs. Edwards as it was their first posting as Head of Mission while it was also their last family posting, Mr. Edwards recalls.

MEGA SEOUL 4 DECADES 전시 부대행사 "전•현직 주한 캐나다 대사님들이 들려 주는 서울 경험담1"은 레오나드 에드워드 전 주한 캐나다대사 부부의 인터뷰 영상입니다. 에드워드 대사님은 1991년부터 1994년까지 서울에서 재임하셨습니다.

에드워드 대사님은 서울 재임 시 목격한 한국의 경제적 역동성에 압도되었다는 말씀으로 인터뷰를 시작하십니다. 특히 동대문시장과 남대문시장을 예로 들며 그곳에 가면 없는 것이 없었고, 당시는 그 모든 물품들이 다 한국에서 만들어진 것이었다고 언급하십니다. 시장의 사람들과 그들이 뿜어 내는 에너지는 바로 한국 경제 성장의 원동력이었다고 기억하십니다.

개인적으로도 서울은 두 분께는 절대로 잊을 수 없는 도시로, 에드워드 대사님 부부가 처음으로 대사로 부임한 곳이 서울이었으며, 가족과 함께 해외에서 외교관 생활을 했던 마지막 도시가 바로 서울이라고 합니다.
