it cannot resist and seems to give up …
and begins to despair.

Opera can be crazy! Antonio Vivaldi wrote the opera Griselda which was first performed in 1735. In this opera a convoluted series of unlikely events places Princess Costanza in a dilemma (come to think of it, convoluted series of unlikely events are quite common in opera). Poor Constanza is betrothed to the King, but she loves the handsome Prince Roberto. She is torn between duty to her family which favors marriage to the king, and her love for Roberto. She expresses her despair in the aria Agitata da due venti (Shaken by two winds). The aria lyrics describe a sailor in a ship buffeted by two winds who fears being shipwrecked. This is a metaphor for Constanza’s situation where the conflicting demands of duty and love make choosing one over the other an impossibility. Agitata da due venti is a wildly difficult aria requiring the skills of a coloratura soprano. Coloraturas have exceptional range and vocal dexterity. The cover I selected for you is sung by the Italian mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli. I just love watching her perform, she has a million dollar smile and her mannerisms during her performance are a hoot.
