A 19th-century tenement built for Dawid Tempel houses the Lodz flat of inspector Adam Kruk (Michał Żurawski), where he lives with his wife, Anna (Katarzyna Wajda). When Kruk is left home alone, trouble begins. Addicted to pain killing opioids, he ingests them to get through another day. A little boy with glasses who, playing the harmonica, suddenly appears in Kruk's bathroom, opens a symbolic door to the past and then we learn that both Adam and an old friend, Sławek (Cezary Łukaszewicz), were brought up in an orphanage in Białystok. When we find ourselves again in Kruk's flat in Łódź, Anna is putting plates of soup on the table. On the balcony, the now grown-up Sławek is playing his indispensable harmonica, and in the background, we see the former edifice of the Textile Headquarters.
