Embodied Music Experience: A Biocultural Approach
For the 2023 spring edition - “Embodied music experience: a biocultural approach” – music will feature on the NHL webinar series for the first time, hopefully serving as a launchpad for integrating the rich field of music and neuroscience with broader research on the neuroscience of the arts and humanities. The series will cover contemporary themes in music and language, emotion, multimodal perception, predictive coding, cross-cultural studies, creativity, motor involvement, music information retrieval, empathy, development, and therapeutic applications. Through a diverse spectrum of global scholars, it will address fundamental questions and leading edge research on the unique role and impact of music in human life: how it makes us feel, think and move.
The Neuroscience and Humanities Lab (NHL) is a centre for advanced studies in cognitive neuroscience and the humanities at the University of Parma, under the direction of Prof. Vittorio Gallese. Specialising in an embodied approach, the lab fosters the integration of research on complex phenomena that shape human experience, society and culture from both theoretical insights and empirical findings. Partnership with the neurosciences can provide humanistic disciplines with profound insights into how our bodies and minds respond to the world, whereas the neurosciences stand to substantially expand and inform their approaches beyond the often reductionist principles of empirical research. Since 2020, the NHL’s webinar series has fostered the communication and dissemination of international interdisciplinary research across a wide range of themes, such as “Screens and the digital mediascape” and “The expressive body: performativity, embodiment and neuroscience”.
