Lt. "Rusty" Ryan (John Wayne), Lt. Brickley (Robert Montgomery) and the 3rd Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron of the U.S. Navy finally get the go-ahead for action in the Philippines after the bombing of Pearl Harbor sends the U.S. into war. While the torpedo crew are originally ordered to patrol and stand by, an air raid by Japanese forces offers the squadron their first chance at action.
