Melting Borders USA - Manhattan 2023

Melting Borders is a performance conceived in Armenia during a residency program curated by Susanna Gyulamiryan. In Melting Borders, Matlakas carries 5 ice creams that have the color of the local flag, in this case, Italy. In more or less an hour, the colored ice cream/flag melts over the artist and on a white shirt that the artist claims as "The Sweet Flag" (the flag of culture and the people, not anymore the political symbol to be identified with). The shirt in fact becomes like an abstract painting that the artist collects every time he performs, usually shown as a relic of his performances. This time, Melting Borders was performed in New York, collecting the Sweet Flag of the USA. This time, the intervention was documented by Louis Detroit, an artist/ videographer from London.
