Dayton Reimaging Project: Green Downtown Dayton-Part I, 1979

Throughout the 1970's, 80's, 90's and 00's and thru today, Dayton has been in a continuous process of repairing itself from the very disruptive actions of the 1960's urban renewal projects and freeway building efforts. There was a greening effort that was launched in the fall of 1979 that represented an early attempt to create a more livable street environment. It was called Green Downtown Dayton. The organized effort lasted into the 1990's and established a significant precedent for landscaping and greening that became embedded in Daytons' development approach. This video was a 35mm slide show that was used to promote the effort. It is very dated and fun to watch. However, it contains some great slides of downtown in the 1970's.

This effort was led by Fred Bartenstein. Fred, at the time, worked in the City Managers Office and orchestrated a very impressive community engagement effort that included leadership from the business community (Ron Dickerson of Gem Savings) and a variety of very active Garden Clubs (Four Seasons Garden Club, Garden Club of Dayton).
