Poet, musician, and former US Poet Laureate Joy Harjo, a citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, presents a special program at Longwood Gardens as the inaugural André Harvey Creative Fellow.
Through her powerful poetry, Harjo weaves together stories of heritage, resilience, and connection to the land—blending vivid imagery, personal history, and tradition to illuminate themes of identity and our deep ties to the natural world. In this program, she reads selections from her award-winning body of work spanning decades, including poems from her recent book, Poet Warrior, and shares musical performances from her forthcoming album, Insomnia in Seven Steps to Grace.
This recording captures a celebration of creativity and culture, inviting reflection on the rich histories and living traditions of Indigenous peoples while showcasing the transformative power of art and storytelling.
The André Harvey Creative Fellowship, established to continue the artistic legacy of Brandywine Valley sculptor André Harvey (1941–2018), offers a biennial residency at Longwood Gardens for creative professionals to engage deeply with nature and create new works that enrich and inspire audiences. Generously funded by a gift from Bobbie Harvey, the Fellowship underscores Longwood’s commitment to accessibility, beauty, and learning.
