Hi Travis and Suzi! Here is the final movement of Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, “The Farewell.” This has to be the bleakest music I have ever heard. I won’t give you the lyrics this time as it’s too much, but here’s the gist of it: The narrator, who’s aware of her impending death, tells her loved ones that she has to head to the mountains to get some rest. She later confesses that she will die soon but tries to offer comfort by turning their attention to the earth’s timelessness and how it will bloom each spring for all of eternity. The orchestration is delicate and sparse, and the last section reminds me of being on a small boat in choppy waters with waves coming from different directions but gradually subsiding to complete still. This music is so incredibly beautiful, but it can get me down, man, you know? So focus on the beauty of it, and try not to think about the message too much. (Please start at 50:08 and stop at 1:07:16.)
