Walking the cup is a great technique and while it is mostly used in pipe welding for both butt joints as well as socket welds, It can also be used on some structural joints wherever permitted.
This short video shows a Stainless steel multiple pass fillet weld that is similar to a heavy wall socket weld and also shows a 3G plate on carbon steel root and hot pass.
