DIY Bokashi Bran Flake

If you answered "yes," then you know that Bokashi Composting is a way to compost more difficult kitchen scraps that can't be tossed "as is" into most compost piles because they may attract rodents or bad bacteria to your compost or just take forever to decompose.

When I first started looking into Bokashi Composting, I didn't know any local gardener that used this technique. So, I went on a fact finding mission to figure out how I could compost as much of my food waste as possible in an affordable way. What I found was expensive set ups and even more expensive materials for composting using this method.

After a little more research, I figured out a few ways to Bokashi compost more affordably with a DIY set up and DIY bran. I found a Bokashi Bran inoculation method I liked that seemed affordable using materials that I could find more or less rather easily, and this episode shares that finding.

This video is intentionally short and to the point so you can get an idea of what to expect, what adjustments you may need to make using this bran inoculation recipe, and potential mistakes to look for. I'd love for you to watch this video until the end to hear the extra details, but I hate it when YouTube accounts don't type out the ingredient list for you.

So, here it is!

Bokashi Bran Recipe:

Combine
1 pound Bran
1 cup Distilled Water
1/2 Tbsp Molasses
1/2 Tbsp EM-1 Microbe

Tip: Reserve at least 1 cup bran so the mixture isn't too dry, alternatively, mix up more liquid and add as needed. All of my attempts using this recipe yielded a drier mix than desired possibly due to the climate at the time this video was made.
