OI LIVE is back for another great meeting. Officials Institute Chairman of the Board, Joshua Schroeder, recently hosted the September 19, 2024 meeting titled Manage the Game - players coaches fans. Many OI Members attended and contributed to a lively discussion about game management and what to do in tough situations. There was a variety of plays to watch but they all involved some sort of game management technique to help keep the game in control.
OI LIVE meetings are conducted the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm with the intent to provide instruction for basketball officials, and assist in helping everyone get better. Watching and discussing videos in a group brings better awareness in how to apply the rules of basketball in real game situations and provides a fun and supportive environment for officials to ask questions and share philosophies by fellow officials. Asking questions while analyzing video is a valuable learning tool and by giving repetitive looks at the same play increases retention of rules and philosophies of rules. All videos shown are actual high school basketball videos.
The video of this online meeting includes 12 various video clips with the theme of game management.
0:00 - Intro
0:47 - Hard foul with a player landing on top of an opponent. Some good tips discussed on how to handle this type of situation.
4:42 - Technical foul after a missed shot. Could we have done better handling this?
8:38 - Another technical foul and this one was during a dead ball. There is a fine line between a talk to and a technical foul.
18:30 - Facebook play about a possible delay of game. Did the kid kick the ball intentionally? Should it have been given an official delay of game warning?
28:20 - A couple of players causing issues on a throw-in and the Lead addresses the with a talk to. How would you manage this?
37:32 - After a hard foul the defender walks toward his opponent and bumps him. Officials are right on top of it ensuring it doesn't escalate.
41:21 - Officials yells at the bench to sit down from the opposite side of the court. Is this method okay to do?
48:12 - Six players on the court equals a technical foul. Can officials do anything here to avoid this penalty?
52:05 - Messy play turns into a foul and then a technical foul for a player laughing emphatically at the official.
1:02:00 - Meeting Schedule
Watching video clips is a good way to stay connected to the skill of officiating basketball but education and learning can more effectively be attained doing it in a group with some direction from a key speaker. Remembering specific rules and application of those rules is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand.
The Officials Institute, and their monthly video review meetings, create a fun environment that allows participants to speak up and voice their opinions on plays without negative retribution or rebuttals. Everyone's opinion is worth something and adds to the overall learning experience that everyone should strive for, regardless of years of experience. Breaking down film in slow motion and freeze frames helps to "retrain our brain" so when we see the same plays in real time we are in a better position mentally to get the call right.
