Back at it again, I just finished this Auto-lite conversion. I haven't made one of these in almost two years. Now I remember why- it's a crazy amount of work.
I made a few cosmetic changes to at least somewhat reduce the amount of work, like I no longer sand the flats of the blades.
I tried to show the lock-up, the lock travels less than half way across the tang when the knife is fired. This gives it plenty of room to wear in over time.
Some things you can't see in the video are-,
No matter how far the blade is pressed into the handle, the edge of the blade cannot hit the spring. So there is no chance of damaging the edge. This is something I require of all of my Ti-lite conversions.
It's important to me that the tips of my Auto-lites sit well below the edge of the liners when the knife is closed. When the knife in this video is closed the tip of the blade sits 3/16ths of an inch below the edge of the liners (I used a pic of this as the thumbnail pic). 5/32nds of an inch is the minimum depth that I require.
Like all of my switchblades my Auto-lites have zero blade play or lock play, the blades lock up tight. This is something I require from all of my knives. A properly adjusted stock Ti-lite 6 will have no play, but producing a switchblade with no play, but that fires strong, takes effort. It involves the proper design of the spring, and how it's installed, among other things.
Of course none of this happens by chance. It is the result of many hours of detailed work and precise custom hand-fitting of parts.
As always, thanks again to Lynn Thompson and Phil Boguszewski for creating the Ti-lite 6. The greatest folding stiletto ever made.
