Watch my interview with London-based (born in Colombia) artist Oswaldo Maciá on his olfactory-acoustic sculpture, Anesthesia. In this work, Maciá spectacularly combines anesthetic smells diffused by heated wax with the sound of bees, creating a parallel between the etymology of "aesthetic" and the numbing of all human senses except vision. The piece incorporates recordings of endangered bee species and their unique communication, which relies on vibrations rather than sound.
This interview is part of my collaboration with the Berlin-based new music magazine Positionen and is published in German in Positionen issue number 141. Please explore this and my other interviews on scent-based music pieces.
Oswaldo Maciá is renowned for creating olfactory-acoustic sculptures that respond to time, place, and the ever-changing nature of our planet. His work stimulates questions about how we find our place in the world. Born in the Caribbean city of Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, Maciá now lives and works in London and New Mexico, focusing on themes of migration and cross-pollination.
