How to choose the right mulch for your gardening needs | Gardening 101 | Gardening Australia

Different mulches suit different applications.
Light mulches like pea straw, sugarcane or lucerne: Great for the veggie patch, will put nutrients into the soil as they break down, and retain moisture. Avoid using around low-hanging fruit like strawberries as it can harbour slugs.

Eucalyptus or tea tree mulch: A favourite for natives, as it is similar to what would happen in nature.

Leaf mulch: great to bring back habitat for lizards and insects. Good all-rounder.

Tree clippings: Heavier mulch, hold water and suppress mulch. Good for bigger trees.

Chunky pine mulch: Aesthetically pleasing, takes ages to break down. Perfect for paths and as weed suppression. Not so good for garden beds.

Hardwood mulch: Heavy mulch that takes years to break down. Keeps a lot of water in the soil. Great for paths.
