Varan the Unbelievable is one of the strangest and most forgettable entries in Toho’s kaiju catalog. In this video, I take a closer look at how a doomed American TV co-production from 1958 spiraled into one of the weakest monster movies Toho ever released. Rather than a harsh takedown, this is more of a postmortem, an attempt to understand what went wrong, why it went wrong, and how the filmmakers (both Ishiro Honda and Eiji Tsuburaya were involved) behind Godzilla and Rodan ended up with… this. From behind-the-scenes compromises to an oddly lifeless monster, we’ll dig into the strange history of Varan and the many missed opportunities that led to its collapse.
