Der in Oberndorf am Neckar geborene Komponist studierte am Leipziger Konservatorium, wo er später als Nachfolger Max Regers Komposition und Musiktheorie unterrichtete. Schon zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts erschienen in rascher Folge viele seiner Werke für Orgel und Harmonium, die ihn vor allem in England, Australien und in den USA bekannt machten. Sein impressionistischer Stil manifestiert sich vollgültig gerade in seinen Orgelwerken. lm Herzen Symbolist und Miniaturist zugleich, vermochte Karg-Elert den Weg zu einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit nicht finden, wie der ihm in vielem nah verwandte Reger. Dennoch kann man ihn mit Recht als den bedeutendsten Meister des „lyrischen Orgelstücks“ neben Reger bezeichnen.

In der hochromantischen Tonsprache seiner Improvisation „Näher, mein Gott, zu dir“ hat Karg-Elert wohl nicht nur eine sinnbildliche Katastrophe der Moderne verarbeitet, sondern auch den Tod eines Jugendfreundes, der als Oboist der Schiffskapelle an Bord gewesen war. Sicherlich ist auch ein Nachdenken über sein eigenes Schicksal ein Motiv für diese Komposition gewesen: Geplant war, dass der damals 35-jährige Sigfrid Karg-Elert bei der Jungfernfahrt der „Titanic“ Dirigent der Bordkapelle sein sollte. Er musste aber aus Krankheitsgründen diese Reise absagen, was ihm vermutlich das Leben rettete.

Seine Musik schildert die dramatische Situation des untergehenden Schiffes. Die Strophen werden auf dem dramatischen Höhepunkt jäh unterbrochen vom Aufschrei der ersten Textzeile des Chorals ,,Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir", bevor die letzte Strophe ,,grandioso e maestoso" anhebt und nach einem stillen „Kyrie eleison“ in einem vierfachen Pianissimo mystisch verklingt.

The composer was born in Oberndorf on the Neckar and studied at the Leipzig Music Conservatory. There he later became the successor of Max Reger as a Professor for composition, harmony, and counterpoint. As early as at the beginning of the 20th century, many of his compositions for organ and harmonium had been published permanently, becoming a very popular repertory of English, Australian, and American organists. His symbolist as well as impressionistic musical style is perfectly expressed by his organ works. He was a real miniaturist, but he achieved not the same success in Germany like his contemporary Reger who showed partly a great spiritual affinity to Karg-Elert. Nevertheless he has to be regarded as the most important composer of lyrical organ pieces in Germany during this period beside Reger.

In the highly romantic tonal language of his Improvisation on "Nearer, my God, to Thee" Karg-Elert not only depicts a symbolic catastrophe of modern age, but also the death of his childhood friend Alfred Jochade, who had been on board as an oboist in the ship's band. Certainly, thinking about his own fate was also a motive for this composition: the plan was for the then 35-year-old Sigfrid Karg-Elert to conduct the ship's band on the maiden voyage of the "Titanic". However, he had to cancel this trip due to illness, which very likely saved his life.

His music describes the dramatic situation of the sinking ship. The verses are abruptly interrupted at the dramatic climax by the scream of the first line of the chorale, "Aus tiefer Not” (“From deep distress, I cry to you,") before the final verse begins, "grandioso e maestoso," and after a silent "Kyrie eleison", in a quadruple pianissimo mystically fades away.
