Today's video is the last from a day out at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire, UK last month and it's another look at the amazing variety of hardy bamboos grown in their fantastic bamboo tunnel section - golden, green, black and even blue bamboo plants. I look at the different varieties, clumping vs. 'invasive' running bamboos and my best bamboo choices for UK gardens. Undervalued evergreen plants, bamboo can be great plants for winter structure, screening, hedges and there's varieties for large specimen / focal plants and small gardens, sun or shade. They bring height, graceful appearance, movement and sound to the garden and are especially worth exploring if you're growing a tropical style, exotic, jungle or Japanese themed garden here in the UK.
This book 'Hardy Bamboos: Taming the Dragon' by Paul Whittaker is the BEST book on bamboo varieties and care here in the UK, a must read: https://amzn.to/3fTJ8Zn
Fargesia robusta 'Campbell' - a great clumping bamboo to around 4m tall, tough and suitable for sun or shade.
Phyllostachys nigra - black bamboo, great for sheltered gardens and visually striking, best planted with enough space or with a rhizome barrier to prevent spreading.
Borinda papyrifera - blue bamboo, a beautiful clumping variety, different forms of varying hardiness but certainly a special plant!
Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Aureocaulis' - an amazing true golden bamboo to around 6m, some culms have a zig-zag form at the base. Best planted with a rhizome barrier to prevent spreading.
Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Spectablis' - An lovely true golden bamboo to around 6m, some culms have a zig-zag form at the base but this variety has green stripes too. Best planted with a rhizome barrier to prevent spreading.
Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis' - One of the BEST varieties if you want big canes here in the UK, check out my other video on growing giant bamboo in the UK for more tips. A runner but one of the most visually striking plants you can grow. The more heat, sun, nutrients and water it gets in summer, the bigger it'll grow...
