Roadtrek Camping North – Exploring Ontario’s Hidden Lakes and Islands | Free To Wander Now
Join us as we take our Roadtrek campervan Tia Maria north on an unforgettable Ontario road trip — from the shores of Lake Huron to the peaceful forests of Northern Ontario.
In this video, we visit McGregor Point Provincial Park, explore Tobermory and the Fathom Five National Marine Park Visitors Centre, cross Georgian Bay aboard the iconic Chi-Cheemaun Ferry (operated by Owen Sound Transportation Company), spend time with family on Manitoulin Island, and end our journey with a quiet camping escape at Fairbank Provincial Park, west of Sudbury.
If you love RV travel, campervan life, and discovering Ontario’s Provincial Parks, this video is for you.

Our Ontario Road Trip Route
We start our trip at McGregor Point Provincial Park, one of the loveliest campgrounds on Lake Huron’s shore near Port Elgin. From there, we drive north to Tobermory, the gateway to the Bruce Peninsula — home to turquoise waters, rugged cliffs, and the start of the famous Bruce Trail.
Before catching the ferry, we stop at the Fathom Five National Marine Park Visitors Centre, where you can climb a lookout tower, explore educational exhibits about shipwrecks and underwater caves, and get a bird’s-eye view of the islands scattered across the bay.
Then we board the Chi-Cheemaun Ferry, operated by Owen Sound Transportation, for the two-hour crossing to South Baymouth on Manitoulin Island. It’s one of Ontario’s most scenic and unique travel experiences — a journey across open water that connects the Bruce Peninsula with the world’s largest freshwater island.
After a short stay on Manitoulin Island, where we reconnect with family and local life, we drive east toward Fairbank Provincial Park, a small, quiet park near Sudbury. Nestled among the rocky outcrops and pine forests of Northern Ontario, Fairbank is the perfect place to unplug, slow down, and enjoy nature.

Discovering Ontario Provincial Parks
Ontario is home to over 300 Provincial Parks, each offering its own kind of beauty — from the majestic Algonquin to the popular Killbear, and the wild, remote Quetico.
We’ve camped at many over the years, but this trip took us somewhere new — to Fairbank, a park that feels untouched and deeply peaceful. It’s smaller than many, but it has that classic northern charm: clear blue water, granite shores, and endless quiet.
Whether you’re an experienced RVer or a weekend camper, Ontario’s Provincial Parks offer endless opportunities for adventure, from swimming and hiking to kayaking and stargazing.

About the Chi-Cheemaun Ferry
The Chi-Cheemaun Ferry (meaning “Big Canoe” in Ojibwe) is more than just a way to travel — it’s a symbol of northern adventure. Since 1974, the ferry has connected Tobermory and South Baymouth, carrying vehicles, RVs, and campers across Georgian Bay from May through October.
Operated by Owen Sound Transportation Company, the Chi-Cheemaun is one of Ontario’s most scenic ferry rides — with open-air decks, a café, and stunning lake views the entire way. If you’re planning to bring your campervan or RV, be sure to reserve early — spots fill quickly during summer!

Fairbank Provincial Park – Peaceful, Unplugged Camping
Fairbank might not be as famous as Ontario’s bigger parks, but it’s perfect for a few unplugged days of R&R. The lake’s crystal-clear water, forest trails, and family-friendly beach make it a wonderful destination for anyone looking for quiet beauty off the beaten path.
For us, it was the perfect way to wrap up the season — mornings spent walking, afternoons reading, and evenings with tea by the water.

🇨🇦 Why We Love Traveling Canada
For us, exploring Ontario’s parks and backroads is more than travel — it’s a way of coming home. Canada’s vast landscapes, small towns, and natural spaces offer endless opportunities to reconnect, recharge, and remember what matters most.
Every road trip reminds us how lucky we are to live here — surrounded by lakes, forests, and the freedom to roam.

About Free To Wander Now
We’re Jessie and Michael, a Canadian couple traveling in our Roadtrek 190 campervan, Tia Maria. We share stories of campervan travel, RV life, early retirement, simple living, and marriage on the road — created to inspire older adults and retirees to travel more, live intentionally, and embrace freedom in this stage of life.
If you enjoy exploring Canada, hearing about unique places, or dreaming of your own road trip, we’d love for you to subscribe and join us on our adventures!
