Virtual Production & Extreme Sports! How We Filmed Skiing On An LED Volume

A few weeks ago, we brought the slopes to our Hangzhou LED stages to shoot a snowy ad for one of our clients, Alibaba Group ‪@alibabagroup‬

The project was completed from start to finish in 20 days, from creative to production, and produced entirely on The Versatile Stage using Versatile's Virtual Production system.

Using Virtual Production allowed our team to mitigate uncertainties from China's latest Covid wave and also unlocked many possibilities for new ways of shooting extreme sports.

The crew spent a day to produce a Previz that captured the intricate and expansive camera movements in the alpine environment. The Previz was also used as an A Copy to review and confirm the ad content with the client for more clarity and efficient feedback during the approval process. Shots and scene data generated from Previz then continued on to Techviz in order to reverse engineer how everything would be shot on the LED stage.
