Kassa (Cassa) is a harvest dance of the Malinke from East Guinea.
The word kassa means barn. During the harvest period, the farmers go to the fields, which are sometimes far away from the village.
A camp is set up there for as long as necessary.
A few women come to prepare the meals (and sing).
The drummers follow the work from field to field all day long while Kassa is played. Occasionally there is dancing. When the harvest is in, there is a festive reception ( Kassalodon ) in the village.
A custom that is connected to this work in the remote fields is that a girl (the prettiest in the village) hangs her headscarf on a stick at the end of the field. The first to reach the end of the field (with work) gets this woman in his hut for the night.
However, the intention is not for 'something' to happen, because if the girl were to become pregnant, the man in question would be beaten in public. Kassa is a very popular rhythm in West Africa and is therefore known in several variations.
