Abbey hotel Tintern.
🏨 What is it / Current status
• The Abbey Hotel (formerly the Beaufort Arms) is an 18th century inn located directly opposite Tintern Abbey, on the A466 (Wye Valley Road).
• It has been closed for more than a decade, and has fallen into disrepair.
• The building is boarded up and considered unsafe, with issues of deterioration and occasional anti-social behaviour.
🏛 Role & Significance
• Because of its position opposite the Abbey and on the main A466 road, it has long been a prominent local landmark / gateway to Tintern Abbey.
• It was part of the infrastructure supporting tourism, especially from the 18th/19th centuries when interest in picturesque landscapes and ruins (e.g. Tintern Abbey) was growing.
⸻
🔍 Plans & Ownership
• In 2022, the property was sold. The new owner is DEEP R&D Ltd, a company behind an underwater research campus near Chepstow and involved in buying up local hospitality assets.
• The intention is to refurbish the Abbey Hotel and reopen it as a business/hotel rather than turn it fully into housing.
• Some earlier proposals for housing (and partial conversion) were made, but these have since been withdrawn or superseded.
⸻
⚠️ Caveats / Unknowns
• It is not yet open (at the last update).
• The timeline for refurbishment and reopening is unclear. Regulatory/planning issues have delayed progress.
• Because of its derelict state, the building may need substantial work.
