During the snow-free period, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road links Carinthia to Salzburg and is one of the country’s most popular destinations. The region acts as a magnet for hikers, with an exciting tour starting from Heiligenblut: the long-distance Alpe-Adria-Trail, which leads from the Grossglockner via Carinthia, Slovenia and Friuli Venezia Giulia to the Upper Adriatic.

Guided hikes in the Hohe Tauern National Park are also becoming increasingly popular, with activities such as watching wildlife, glacier trekking or night tours. A popular activity in summer is panning for gold in the gold diggers village. This reconstructed village tells the history of the gold miners who prospected for gold here between the 14th and 18th centuries.

In winter a breathtaking sports arena covers the region, beckoning visitors to come and ski, freeride, go on ski tours, winter hikes or cross-country skiing, amidst the sparkling natural wonderland.

Fine food is also not forgotten in Heiligenblut, where one highlight is the annual Glockner Lamb Festival.

The regional Christmas carolling that takes place here in January is a custom dating from the 16th century, which also figures on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage in Austria.
