Trains at Hayes & Harlington (GWML) - 28-29/10/2024

This video across one evening and the next day morning, takes us along to the very western edge of Greater London, close to Heathrow Airport at Hayes & Harlington railway station. A moderate, 5-platform DfT Category D "Medium staffed" train station, it was first opened between 1864-68, along the present day Great Western Main Line, which had opened piece-by-piece up to a temporary halt in Maidenhead back in 1838, then furthermore from there.

From the 1st March 1883, the station - initially called Hayes - was served by District Railway (not the same as modern day District Line) services between Mansion House and Windsor (Central) (todays Windsor & Eton Central station). These services terminated in September 1885 after being deemed uneconomical. The booking office was replaced in 1961 with a building to a modern design erected on a concrete raft over the line.

During the late 20th century, the Airport Link part of the line from Hayes & Harlington to Heathrow Airport was opened, consisting of a flyover junction to the west of Hayes & Harlington, carrying rail services up and over the GWML and down into tunnels underneath the airport, for todays Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3, Heathrow Terminal 4 and Heathrow Terminal 5. As with all small stations on the line between Paddington and Reading, the station was heavily modernised in the 2010s for the introduction of Elizabeth Line/Crossrail services from Reading/Heathrow through Paddington to Shenfield and Abbey Wood. This included gate/barriers to keep passengers from the fast line platforms, upgraded signalling systems, extended platforms, a new modern entrance building and lifts throughout.
