For the first time in nearly a decade, an SP patch GE has visited the coastline. In 2020, an SP patch GP60 (1053) was based out of Oxnard yard for a short time, and while that is still an original SP paint locomotive, I’m referring to the dwindling fleet of patched AC4400CWs. The last patched AC44 ran up the line in 2018, which also just happened to be none other than 6379. With just 5 of these patched locomotives left today excluding the GP units, I knew I had to see this thing every chance I got. In the three and a half weeks it was running the haulers out of Gemco, I managed to get it about a dozen times. The pair of SD70Ms behind it made it feel like a lashup you’d see in the 2000s. Unfortunately, this may be the last patch unit to visit the coastline. As of now there are 5 active compared to the 7 in 2022, but that number will slowly shrink down over time. Nevertheless, seeing these relics still earning their keep almost 30 years after the SP ceased to exist still amazes me.
