How is SpongeBob Autistic?

SpongeBob is autistic, but you may be confused on why I said that.

So join me as I'll explain what autism is, what SpongeBob traits counts as autism, and why headcanoning him is important to autistic people like myself. Because I'll trust you, it's not that pretty.

⚠️ Disclaimers ⚠️

1. My sources came from both the DSM-5 and from actual autistic people. This was done to get the most accurate information, since there are misconceptions about autism.

2. The DSM-5 was used because not only is SpongeBob an American cartoon, but the cast has celebrated American Independence Day before.

On that note, I did take every season into amount. You would be surprised to see how much essential info there was post-Season 3 (especially Season 6).

3. I get that some autistic people don't use medical terms to describe their condition, while others do. To make things fair for everyone, I used BOTH interpretations of autism for this video. Honestly, this is how I would describe autism anyway.

4. While I am an autistic person, I’m not a medical expert. So, this video isn’t meant to be a guide to diagnose yourself with autism.

But if you suspect you do have autism though, then you'll have to go find a neurodivergent-affirming clinician instead. Your "autistic traits" may not need support at all. But if you can't get one due to money or discrimination, then that's fine with me.

This video is actually the remake of a 2017 ‪@MixedStarMaster‬ video, "Could SpongeBob Have Autism?" I ended up making that video private because I didn't have proper knowledge of autism at the time. So, I used my own experience instead.

I was meaning to remake that with what I know today since last year, but I kept delaying it. It wasn't until July 2024 that I finally decided to do it. (The reason why is explained in the video.)

Admittedly, the research for this video has made me sad. Now, I get why autism is a disability.
