Sites vs. Web Parts vs. Pages

SharePoint has 3 main building blocks: Sites, Web Parts, and Pages. In this video, I explain the difference between the three.

Sites - sites are pretty much workspaces of content. Content could be files and folders, pages and lists. The site is where we set security in SharePoint. As a result, every time you have unique security - it is considered best practice to set up a new SharePoint site.

Web Parts - think of web parts as apps on your phone. It is something that is used to store or present information on a screen. For example, there is a Web Part called News to display news and announcements. There is a Web Part called Events to present calendar of events and so on.

Pages - pages are used to display content on a site using the Web Parts. By default, when you create a site, you get just one page, but you can create additional pages. Though you can set security at a page level, it is not considered the best practice. For this, you would need to create a new SharePoint site.
