The ETS service officially launched on 12 August 2010, initially operating between Ipoh and Seremban, marking the beginning of Malaysia’s first electric intercity rail service. It was later expanded to northern destinations like Butterworth and Padang Besar. With different service tiers—Platinum, Gold, and Silver—the ETS dramatically reduced travel times and became a popular, efficient option for long-distance travel across the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
The KTM Class 91 is a first six-car electric train introduced in 2009 by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) for Malaysia’s Electric Train Service (ETS). Built by Hyundai Rotem and Mitsubishi Electric, it was designed for speeds up to 160 km/h (usually running at 140 km/h) which holds as the fast metre-gauge rail service. The ETS train offers comfortable seating, onboard toilets, power outlets, LCD screens, and a bistro car.
Today, ETS fleet has expanded to three generation types of train and runs across major cities like Padang Besar, Butterworth, Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, Seremban, Gemas and Kluang, with daily ridership reaching over 14,000 as of Q1 2025 and over 4 million trips in 2024.
