The Aiki Dojo 2 Minute Technique - Jo-nage Nikyo

In this episode of the Aiki Dojo 2 Minute Technique, David Ito Sensei, Aikido 5th Dan explains the basics of doing Nikyo with a Jo or “short staff.” Nikyo with a Jo falls into the Jo-nage category where the opponent tries to grab hold of the Jo or take it from us. Technically, Jo-nage Nikyo is actually two different techniques based upon the grab. Initially, when the opponent grabs, we do Nikyo. However, once the hold is applied, the opponent will naturally let go of the Jo. Once this happens, we change the Nikyo into a shoulder lock. When doing the shoulder lock, we should be careful when applying it as it could cause damage to the shoulder. Please practice this technique at your own risk.
