It happens to the best of us, but we just happened to be recording Bruce and Lynn Kitchen when Bruce fell out of the boat during the first race of the 2017 Great 48 Regatta, causing the boat to capsize.
They were not able to prevent the boat from turtling, but maintained a positive attitude and were happy to let us share this so others may learn from it and hopefully share a good laugh.
Thanks Bruce and Lynn for being such great sports!
A couple of things to remember during a capsize ONCE YOU HAVE CONFIRMED EVERYONE IN YOUR BOAT IS SAFE!
1) Get to the mast to prevent it from turtling. The buoyancy from your life jacket should be adequate to prevent it from going under another person from your boat uncleats the sails and organizes the spinnaker (if applicable).
2) Uncleat the main and jib. Otherwise, the water on top of the main sail will pull the mast under faster. If you right the boat with the sails trimmed in, the wind might push you back over.
3) Always remain in line of site with others in the water. You can climb onto the centerboard by climbing onto the boat and then over to the centerboard.
4) Once someone is on the centerboard, wait until everyone is in the boat so everyone is in the boat when the boat is righted. Trust me, it is a challenge to get back into the boat if you have been swimming and working hard to get the boat back up.
