Skipping Smelter Demon and taking one of the next bonfires is often easier than fighting him. He's optional so you can just come back later.
Getting to Smelter Demon by fighting all enemies on the way requires you to kill 13 Alonne Knights and 2 Alonne Captains.
On path A there's just 6 Alonne Knights, 1 Alonne Captain and 1 Ironclad Soldier, but you can easily skip past a few of those. Path B takes a bit longer, but is usually still easier than fighting Smelter Demon directly.
